First impressions were quite positive . Check in could have been a bit more efficient but we got there in the end . Nice rooms , ours , as two couples travelling together , were located next to each other on the fifth floor overlooking the front of the hotel . Normally I would prefer a pool or sea view but the allocated rooms were fine as they looked out , beyond the large hotel entrance and car park and gardens , towards the busy road . There was always something to watch and we had the sun on the balcony during the late afternoon. Rooms 5167/5168. We had just missed lunch in the dining room on arrival but there was a lovely snack restaurant open which provided a good selection of hot and cold food , salads , desserts and drinks . Bottled water provided from reception as and when you need it . You can hire a safe and kettle from reception. Two lovely pool areas with plenty of sun loungers . No restrictions on " towels on beds" but the season has only just started and hotel policy does state no reserving sun loungers , in the busy periods it could change . Plenty of toilets and easy access as everything is flat . One comment from the menfolk of the group was that dress rules in the restaurant were quite lax . I think men wearing a tidy shirt/ polo shirt and trousers for evening meal could be enforced . Same goes for women wearing Beach items to evening meal time . There are two other restaurants on site for the evenings , a Chinese that has to be booked which is open five nights a week and the other two nights there is a traditional Bulgarian evening held in the snack restaurant . I cannot fault the Chinese restaurant, absolutely the best I have visited on any trip abroad . The Bulgarian meal was ok , but once was enough . Unfortunately we arrived just behind a group of five French ladies who wanted to photograph every item / custom individually on every one of their cameras . It held us up at every stage . The rooms are cleaned daily with fresh towels provided each time and bed linen changed mid way through the week . The bar staff are friendly and efficient but the standard of drinks on the all inclusive deal are not great . We found that during the day if we had a short from the bar and took it outside to the self service soft drinks / mixers they tasted a lot better . Pool towels are provided and can be exchanged daily . All in all it was a nice hotel and we did have value for money . We all agreed that we would return . The Sunny Beach area itself is a bit busy ... lots of shops / stalls / bars / restaurants all chasing your custom as it's a short season . Taxis are readily available and you can hire one to take you to the ancient world heritage site at Nessebar which is well worth a visit and is very beautiful . Thanks to all staff for an enjoyable holiday . More
Great hotel, very central, at the front of hotel, walk across the their car park and your immediately at the many shops, restaurants, and bars, to the back of the hotel go out of the back gate and you are directly on the beach, also if you go left out of the gate again there are many shops, bars, restaurants and supermarkets. the hotel provides bottled water which is a nice added touch, food is good lots of choice, white wine on tap in restaurant is yuk so don't even try it?. rooms great, cleaned daily. The one major down fall to this hotel is the evening entertainment, it only last's for 1 hour and what there was, was a bit hit and miss. But alas the hotel is very central so you can go for walks along the beach, or shop or go for a drink in the many bars. Personally for me this holiday was about being central as I have walking difficulty's so for anybody with walking problems there's always lots to do. You can also get the orange bus ( about a 10 minute stroll up the road opposite the hotel) into neseebar which is 1.30 lev (about 56p) roughly a 15 minute bus journey and well worth the visit. I must say though i was rather surprised that there was no water shoots? flumes for the children, which most other hotels did. Service in the bar (lobby bar) by the main pool needs to be addressed a smile would be nice, the bar waiters look like they cannot be bothered to serve you. Beds very comfortable.Would I go back to sunny beach definitely, This hotel probably.More
Great in a lot of areas but some things need to improve
We spent 10 days at the Riu Helios from the 26 May 2017. Prior to this holiday we were admittedly a bit nervous having just seen the 2013 documentary Booze, Barcrawls and Bulgaria on BBC 4 which portrayed Sunny Beach in a very unfavourable light. Rest assured that we never saw any of that and felt extremely safe. We even went out after 9.30pm with our 7 year old and we never for once felt unsafe or threatened. There were a lot of other families out and about then as well. The locals are very friendly and no where as aggressive as some of the other places we have been to like Italy, Turkey or Morocco. The hotel itself is generally clean and the rooms are nicer than the other Rius we have stayed in and is of a decent size. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Riu Helios and was sad when it came to an end. I have listed the Pros and cons below: Good points: 1) Great Animation team. Jenne, Ivan, George and Andie are fantastic and make an extra effort to make all the guests feel welcome. There was a Zumba class every other day and a few other activities like the Day break but they certainly do need to invest in more staff in their animation team to be able to deliver to the needs of the guests. For example it would be nice to have volleyball every day rather than every other day like what we had in other resorts. The evening entertainment was also very enjoyable but I wouldn't say it was exceptional. One of the key reasons why we really enjoyed ourselves was because the animation team made everyone feel at home. 2) Fantastic Kids club. Compared to the other RIUs we have stayed at, the kids club here is the best and Andie and George work really hard keeping the kids happy. Our son loved the kids club and still dances every night to the Mini Disco tunes. He looked forward to it everyday and literally didn't want to go home. 3) Bulgarian Restaurant has amazing food. Definitely good value for money so I would check this place out. Some of the themed nights like the Balkan Night at the main restaurant also had some great dishes. 4) Nice sized Gym with decent equipment. Another threadmill would be good as there is often a queue for it in the morning! 5) Great location as at the end of the Sunny Beach strip and it was nice having the option to go when needed and retreat to the resort when we had enough. It is also a 15 minute bus ride to Nessebar. This place is absolutely beautiful so I totally recommend at least 1 trip there if you are staying in Sunny beach. 6) Bar staff are friendly and accommodating. Great variety of cocktails and alcohol although during the day the drinks at the Pool Bar seemed a little more "watered down" compared to the Salon Bar. Cons: 1) Certain areas in the service felt like they were trying to cut corners such as : The Chinese restaurant food quality was poor. Firstly, please use light soy instead of dark soy as dipping sauce, the salmon was waaaay over cooked and sushi was cut in too small portions with a very stingy amount of fish. Please do something about the Wine it was absolutely vile, it felt like it was watered down. For 2 days in a row the paper towels, plastic cups and water in the gym weren't replaced even though it had run out. I had to inform them of the situation. 2) The break in the dinner service between 7.30pm - 8pm doesn't make sense. Why would you stop service right in the middle of dinner time in the main restaurant? No other RIUs do it. 3) The air con in the room doesn't work very well 4) This is the first RIU I have been to where the towels are only given out in the morning and returned in the afternoon. Therefore if I decided I wanted to go swim in the pool in the late afternoon, I cant get towels ! 5) The lunch food is also not great, the meat is often overcooked, especially the chicken and there isn't a great variety. The food is slightly better in the main restaurant. 6) Internet we got in the lobby was also really poor so they could probably improve on this.More
Relax or High Life its got it all
1st week in june 2017, Lovely hotel been refurbished to a high standed, our room top floor overlooking pool seaview, splendid. Beds so comfey, huge shower all refurbished, food halls clean, service 10/10 food something for every one, no complaints there being a veg/ husband meat eater. Pizza for kids. perfect location in the middle of sunny beach, wheelchair friendly, beach sand beautiful, lifeguards on the poolside and beach. Childrens /activities staff well happy people. Only thing for us oldies, no adults piano music bar to relax in. All in all a fab week break. will frequent again.More
Riu have delivered again a great hotel. Room was clean however did smell a bit like smoke but I guess if previous guests smoked on balcony it will travel in the room. Air con was great and quiet. Tv had a few English channels (but not there to watch tv). Fridge was good and we didn't use the safe and nothing was missing. We were on the 5th floor. Beds could be a double not 2 singles pushed together with a foot gap. Food was really Good always something to eat could see how it would feel repetitive if there over 1 week. But it's cheap to eat out too. The 2 themed restaurants are not a la carte and the bulgarian restaurant was only open on sunday, the asian restaurant was our favourite meal. 1 suggestion for hotel have crisps in all inclusive. Pool area clean and enough sun beds. The animation team were super, they really enhanced our stay as we get involved with games, Ivan amd Jenny were very funny and friendly as were the others (the others spent most time with the children keeping them happy they did a great job) thanks guys. The beach is right on the doorstep lovely beach and sea, many shops bars and restaurants nearby. Change money at crown currency there everywhere and are reputable and reliable. The alcohol is ok however a list for all inclusive and a list for more drinks to pay for isn't the best thing. Also nuts ate on the list to pay for surely it doesn't cost much for a few nuts. Free bottles of water at reception are good. I would have given 5 stars if beds were doubles and room smelt less Smokey. The 2 themed restaurants were a la carte or table service not self service. And the all inclusive was all inclusive not a menu at the bar you can buy from maybe more choice of cocktails. All in all would recommend staying here if going to bulgaria I would definitely return to this hotel if I come back to Bulgaria Thanks to everyone there More
