this was a booked trip from CheapCaribbean and the rep told us that it catered to bachelorette parties...i don't think it actually accommodated us to that extent. when we arrived (via amstar transportation) the view of the hotel was GORGEOUS. the pool. the ocean. better than the photos. we were served champagne and were told our rooms were not ready. which is fine. it was about 12pm. we then went to the italian restaurant because it was the only one still open for lunch at that point. when we got there we told them we needed a table for 8.....they said they didnt have enough space for 8 and we had to sit at 2 separate tables.....whatever. then a group of 7 spanish speaking people walked in and they put 2 tables together for them. i asked why and the manager told me it was because they had 7 not 8...we could have squeezed. needless to say, that really bothered me. after we ate the so so food, we grabbed our suits out our luggage and went to the beach. so gorgeous. great service too from the hardworking people who got our orders right every time. once we finally got into our rooms most of us slept pretty early that night. at 9:15 am we received a call to our room about booking entertainment and bottle service at coco bongo. it's 9:15 am i dont think anyone wanted to discuss that!! so annoying. the food at the mexican restaurant was average. we got there at 9:20pm and it closes at 9:30. the buffet was picked over but the fajitas we ordered were okay. the pool with the swimup bar smelled so bad. i couldn't stomach going up and ordering drinks there. the rooms were damp. our clothes were damp. the AC somewhat worked. our fan didnt really work. when we booked the reservation we requested rooms with the ocean view and the booking agent said they would accommodate because we were there for a Bachelorette party. no such accommodation. we had an awkward view and a glass door preventing us from going to the balcony. we didnt end up complaining because we were too busy enjoying the beach. i thought the breakfast buffet was amazing and the viewwwwww was amazing. water was crystal clear. we all had a nice time. EXCEPT....they have this area called "lounge 24" it is basically a room where you can get unhealthy food 24/7. and obviously,......we did. on multiple occasions, we were told to leave the room because we were wet from the beach. they were rude about it. then we had another terrible experience when the "security" team came to our room to tell us we were being too loud. they were rude about it and made us sign a form to be quiet. all in all, the service from the bar and beach staff was good. i didn't like the concierges. they were unfriendly. the beach was AMAZING. the pool was beautiful. the quiet pool had these beach lounge beds and even at 7 am they were reserved with people's towels. i found that annoying. i would probably return with my boyfriend in the future.More
The bees knees
Must disclose this was our 3rd visit to the RPLA. All other hotels in the Caribbean we have visited get compared to here and I'm pleased to say it's still the best. Rooms are ok, only thing I'd say is I would have hoped for a bit more of an update after the refurbishment, however they were spotless. Yeah there is a bit of a 'humid' smell but keep your balcony door closed over when your outside and the AC will stay on. It wasn't an issue for us. We're not party pool people so chilling near the large chill out pool looking at the sea was fine for us and Juan kept us hydrated and the margaritas coming. It did sound lively and fun if your into that sort of thing. Staff are amazing and what sets this place apart from the rest from the waiters to the cleaning staff always working and greet you with a hello. Food, I guess from previous reviews either some folk are hard to please or I'm not as fussy as I thought. Buffet was great from breakfast though to dinner. We stayed for 2 weeks and found the choice and variety were fine when mixed up with the speciality restaurants. Plenty of branded spirits in all the bars, Jack D, Absolute, Appleton and Bacardi etc and definitely not watered down. Evening shows can be hit or miss, Mayan show was the best one we seen. We spent most time at the terrace bar which is now the showtime bar. Big thanks goes to Ernesto, Linguini and Santi who were fantastic. They are great guys and the banter was always good and the drinks kept coming. Any negatives about the hotel were the result of other guests, from being outright rude to staff for no reason, puking at the bar or face planting due to too much booze. Seen better behaviour on a club 18-30 holiday in Magaluf. That said it didn't put me of my Appleton and Pepsi light and already pining to come back.More
Just another week in paradise
The good the bad the ugly... here it all is with as honest a review as I can write. First of all I'm not a repeater in visiting places but I would definitely go back here. So our transportation from the airport wasn't the best, we waited quite a while, not good when you have been up since 5 am to make all these flights. But after a slight delay in arrival time, we manage to get to the Riu Las Americas. When you walk in the lobby you are greeter by the most picturesque scenery you can hope for, blue awesome blue waters. Checking in takes a while but you are greeted with champagne. So our bell hop takes us to our room that is ocean view and knows right away I'm not happy, concrete barrier for a balcony destroys your view, that happens with floors 3 and 7, floor 1 too I believe. He calls the desk and they will move us tomorrow. So we don't unpack. Miguel the bell hop is a terrific man, so helpful. The next day he shows me the room we can move to and it's a view to die for but smoking really? You people... smoking on the balcony only. He finds me yet another room and shows it to me and it's the one. Dead on view of the infinity pool and the ocean, that aqua ocean! Everyday when I pass Miguel in the lobby, it's always "how are things? let me know if you need anything." He even helped me get bandaids. Ok so the room, large, great rain shower, large bathroom, frig stocked with plenty water and 6 Dos Equis. Had me some towel art for the week. AC worked good enough, there is a ceiling fan. Robes no slippers. With sandy floors slippers would be handy. Sandy floors were our fault, but at a beach... gonna happen. There are liquor dispensers that we used maybe once, you get plenty during the day at the beach or pool. The beds are more like two fulls pushed together and not as hard as reviews I had read. The pillows are too soft but there are plenty to double up. For your day, decide where you want to be and if you want prime spots, go out early and as my husband would say "make your nest". The activity pool loungers get snagged by 9 am and the front beach loungers are about the same. We wanted views of the ocean not people in front of us. We never had trouble getting an umbrella. Beach sand is awesome, always barefooted.. not coarse. You can walk to your left only about 20 minutes and run out of walking beach and to the right much shorter. Need to walk early though, it's hot. Pool beverage service is better than the beach. A shout out to Juan at the pool, also another one, darn me and names, Welburt, no Wilbert I think and he's fun. Pool towel service opens earlier than I am accustomed to. Food is not what I went for but was surprised at the quality. I think Krystal was our favorite, Black and White Steak house was awesome and the Japanese too. Mexican was good with the Italian being my least favorite but not as bad as reviews I read. Our service everywhere was awesome. Bars, well that's what you want to hear about when you go to an all inclusive... there is a bar off the lobby, piano bar. The main bartender Abu is precious. He is so fun. There is a bar in the theater where there are really good bartenders. Worth getting up and getting your own drinks because drink service during shows is sketchy. The shows, typical resort cheesy. My favorite though was Rock Station. It was done by entertainment staff and those kids danced their hearts out with no break for an hour. The entertainment staff is amazing. Tony is so fun, Andrea is a ball of energy and I'll get this name wrong too Choquita... so fun so fun. Now I'm no spring chicken but for the most part people were treated the same, young old... However I will say the entertainment staff is young, they do cater to the young and they go to the nightclubs and that's probably mostly the young because they don't leave until 11 and this old broad was headed to bed. So I understand them catering to the young. I'd say the average age at this resort was probably 40. The one show Las Vegas we got up and left, too risque. Drinks are either sweet or beer. Can't get rum and coke... pepsi products :( I struggled with the sweet sweet drinks after a while. Beer choices are Dos Equis, sometimes Dos Equis Amber, and Tecate/Light. Take loads of sunscreen as the sun penetrates whatever you have on. The resort is cleaned all day long, the folks work hard, very hard. Little tips go a long way. There is trash on the beach and around the pool at times, but I contribute that to lazy people who think they are there to trash Mexico. Never did I read that the staff should wait on you hand and foot but there's sure a mentality like that for some spoiled people. Don't trash the place or any place. There is an awful smell to the right of the swim up bar, must be a sewer issue. They added bird netting to the buffet outdoor seating area, they are bad there. We watched on bird steal a packet of artificial sweetener. That'll crack you up. Of all the choices, sweetener. I struggled with the buffet lunch. I just couldn't find much that satisfied me. The burgers are weird. My husband was ill one day, I say don't eat hotdogs in Mexico from a buffet. The outdoor lunch BBQ we had only one day was awesome, best meat... wow. Breakfast buffet will keep you full, so many yummy choices. Well I did go on for days but ignore the bad reviews. You will enjoy, even the cheesy shows... it's not Vegas or Broadway. They try!More
We were there for 12 fantastic days! From the moment we arrived ,we were in awe at the beauty of the decor! Getting our rooms situated at the front desk was achieved by the awesome concierge Felix. He did so much for all of us to make our stay perfect! 5 stars for that gentleman! There were six of us in our group. ( 3 couples ). Never had a problem dinning at the same table. ( which at other resorts it could be ) 1 buffet and 5 ala carts. The buffet was always delicious and had a different theme each night. We made a amazing friend at the buffet. Ismael..our server most days and he was the happiest and friendliest man ever! We will never forget him. We tried all but the Mexican. All were pretty decent. All of the servers and chefs went out of they're way to make everything special. The pools and beach were amazing. We alternated each day. The pools were perfect temperature and not too cold. The ocean was electric blue at a comfortable temperature and the sand was like powder. The only con I have is that finding an umbrella cold be a slight problem if you show up too late. All the drink runners on the beach and pool areas work their butts off. The resort is walking distance to tons of shopping and all the hot clubs. I could go on and on with positive feed back but I won't spoil all the fun. You must try this resort out for yourself. You won't be disappointed! Would I ever return? YES!! The Dirty Monkeys are really good!! One more thing..if you want to book an excursion or tour, go across the street to book. It's much cheaper than at the resort.More
25th Anniversary Trip
This was our first time there and it was amazing. One thing is clear, the staff are tireless and very friendly. From the first second you get dropped off you get that feeling. The service was relentless. They work extremely hard to make sure the hotel is spotless and comfortable for all. The food was great and the restaurant staff were great also, again, tireless. Our special thanks to Felix at the front desk who made our perfect room experience happen. The lobby has to be one of the best looking lobbies out there and the staff was always attentive and friendly. Special kudos to the bar staff. They put up with some of the crudest human beings when alcohol is involved. Yet they persevere. Our stay at the Palace Las Americas was outstanding. We had a great time thanks to the staff. One last note. If you are a planning to be a patron, remember one thing, a "good morning, good afternoon or good evening how are you doing" goes a long way. The staff is key to your stay, let's make sure they stay.More
