New Favorite Vacation Spot
Just got home from a week at Sun Palace. I've never stayed at an all-inclusive resort and really didn't know what to expect. We booked 5 nights to take advantage of the resort credit they are currently offering. The service was top-notch starting the moment we stepped out of our taxi. As soon as we checked in, the concierge team helped us make sure we had any tours/spa times booked. Michael helped us plan, based on what we told him we were interested in, and provided useful information on each activity. We had an ocean-facing room with a hot tub, it was very clean. The maids left candy, flowers, etc in our room (we are regular tippers), and we returned from one busy day to find a dessert left congratulating us on our anniversary. The service is what really sells this resort, especially when it comes to the food and bars. Norberto, the bar tender by the "quiet pool" remembered us each time we returned and took the time to talk to us. The food is great (I highly recommend the made-to-order omelettes in the morning!), make the effort to get up in the morning and go to the buffet. Room service is fine, but the Alamo is where it's at! Find the Thai lounge upstairs, they also offer exceptional service (and the ice cream sandwich he is to die for). If Fuego (fire show on the beach) is available while you are visiting, go! I thought it would be cheesy, but it was not. It was highly entertaining. *The only negative experience we had was at the Italian restaurant. Maybe it was an off-night, maybe they were training, but the service was slow (about 40 minutes to get our meal, another 20 for dessert), and we felt like we had been sat in a corner and forgotten. This does NOT detract from our overall experience at Sun Palace though. We enjoyed our visit so much that we did sign up for the membership (take the tour to Beach Palace if you have a free day, they offer in incentives. It's not a high-pressure sales pitch), so we'll be back!More
Clean clean clean
Just came back from a week at Sun Palace. Very nice place!!! The staff was very helpful and polite. The hotel was alway being cleaned. Housekeeping was outstanding can not say enough about how our room was cleaned. Just the right quiet and social fun. Food was very well done, always hot and served with a smile. Our room was above the quiet pool, so the only noise was when the staff was setting up the BBQ restaurant at night, or the lounges in the morning, but no big deal. Bar staff was awesome, and trust me the resort does NOT water any drinks. The beach was nice( to bad it was windy). The only improvements (minor). The seaweed on the beach could have been cleaned up a little faster. As I was in the VIP area, it was the last area cleaned up. We had reservations at the Italian restaurant (special occasion area) serves was not what we were seeing elsewhere at the resort. Overall great place for couples.More
A quiet oasis for lovers with delectable food
We stayed in Sun Palace for 10 nights. To make this review helpful to those who are trying to decide wether to stay here or elsewhere, I ll do bullets. If you are looking for peace and quiet stay here. Small and very personable hotel with superb, friendly service from everyone we encountered. Upgrades: we did upgrade to Concierge level. Wether it is worth it or not is all about your personal needs/wishes/desires. For us it was very much worth it. Having your own personal Claudia to ask questions about the resort credits, making appointments or whatever was just super. And Claudia was more then helpful and fun to talk to . We loved the pillow menu, the upgraded lotions etc as well as the 25 minute massages and the concierge dinner. Rooms are amazing. Excellent views from all rooms. Our room was on the 4th floor and it was very quiet. Yes the property is older, however, it is very well maintained and spotless. Timeshare, we never got approached by anyone on this so that was no problem. Spa, I had 3 massages, they were all great. The therapists are all excellent. Entertainment: the Michael Jackson show is awesome, I could not believe the synchronized dancing that this amateur group accomplished. The chef dinner is a lot of fun with lots of singing, dancing, fun and then of course the chef showing you how to fix some delightful dishes that were all paired with wine. A quick note about the wine. I am a sommelier and always in search of nice wines. I did not have great expectations but was very pleased with the choices at this resort. There are some very good Mexican wines, but if you don't want to step out of your comfort zone, then you can order the Moet Chandon Champagne, you can use resort credits for this, it will cost you 89 in credits and then the $14 fee. If you were to compare this to any other fine dining establishment you will note that the cost is very reasonable. They have a great wine list and I tried a lot of them. There was not a bad wine on there. If you are not sure about what wine to order, well ask Olson the resort sommelier (with excellent knowledge, very handsome and friendly young man.) Back to the entertainment, all the shows are great fun, there is something to do each evening, if you want to go party, go to town. It's a very short bus ride away. This resort is wonderful the way it is, low key, romantic, relaxing. There are posters all throughout the resort that shows you what the show of the day is. We did go and explore the Isla de Mujeres. Do it, it's great fun, rent a golf cart and drive with the other 1000 golf carts around the Island. We did not get to do any other day trips as my poor husband tripped on the rocks by the Club Med and twisted his ankle. We were out by Club Med because the water is calmer there and you can swim and snorkel there. We hobbled back to Sun Palace. We had at least 5 reps from the resort come to help out and see if there was anything that could be done. The lifeguard wrapped his ankle and cleaned his wounds, they were all very attentive. Also, just so you know, if you are in need of a doctor, one will come to the hotel for $80, yes, and thats for a house call. Now about the dining. I am truly amazed to see so many people complain about "how long" it takes to get their dinner, dessert etc. You are on vacation, what is your hurry? Why not sit and enjoy all that this resort has to offer. We did. Every evening we choose a different restaurant and tried as many different items as we could from the menus. Not many choices some say? In the 10 days that we were there we still did not get to try all of the food. The attention to detail on the presentation as well as the wonderful blends of flavors were beyond delicious. I have had the pleasure of having dinner all over the US as well as Europe and never have I found more delightfully delicious salads that were so fresh and tasty as at the El Alamo breakfast and lunch buffet. The choices were more then enough, you do not have to have the same thing twice ever. Freshly cooked/grilled items for breakfast and lunch. The lunch buffet has at least 3 different stations from which you can have the cooks grill your choice of chicken, beef, pork, salmon, mahi mahi, octopus, calamari or a number of other items as well as tacos, tortillas, empanadas etc with 5 different salsa and guacamole. And then there are the desserts, oh so delicious and different choices everyday. A must try is the strawberry ice cream. My favorite was La Tratto because it is just a bit more upscale ambience which I love. The steakhouse is very casual, set up by the pool so a bit tricky when it's windy but lovely ocean views. Again many choices for you to choose from, freshly grilled chicken or fish and they have at least 5 different cuts of meat that you can pick from. And we never even made it to the Asian place. The food was spectacular in all of the restaurants as was the service. One other thing about the food, most all of it was smaller portions, it was all super fresh and light, I never once got bloated or felt like I ate an elephant. Clearly all of the dishes are superbly prepared with nothing but quality ingredients. I would say; people, slow it down, smell the roses, sit down and visit with your significant other and slowly eat your way to Nirvana. You can totally do that here at the Sun Palace.More

Another wonderful vacation at the Sun Palace!
As always, our vacation at the Sun Palace was very enjoyable and relaxing because of all the great employees. They are all so friendly, kind and helpful. There are a few employees that made a very positive impression on us during our stay. They are: Beatrice, hosting in the restaurants; Edwardo, was always going above and beyond and doing a phenomenal job keeping us "hydrated" and fed on the beach; another server that was outstanding was Joseph in the Italian restaurant, incredible service everytime we ate there; all of the employees leading the activities, Enrique, Pedro and Chocolate were enthusiastic and helpful. These are just a few that stood out to us, but everyone there were always kind and helpful.More
Great Time ! Bad Departure!
Stayed at the Sun Palace for my second time in February 2017. We went to the resort with two other couples to enjoy the adult only atmosphere. The resort staff by the pool and beach were all excellent. The food and service at the buffet for breakfast and lunch was great and in the Italian and steak restaurants were excellent. The Asian restaurant on the other hand was slow moving at best. Took over two hours to be seated and the service was very slow but the food was delicious. The downfall of the vacation was after checkout. The airport transportation van comes and has inadequate room to accommodate all the people waiting. They place two other couples in the van and only have three seats left and there were four of us waiting. I inquired with Veronica who seemed to be uncharged at the front desk. She came out and counted three seats and said there isn't enough room. She then proceeded to have a conversation with the driver in Spanish and then decided there was enough room. She told me to sit in the front seat in the middle between the driver ( No small guy) and a front passenger. I'm 5'10" 220 lbs and she was expecting me to sit in an unsafe jump seat in the front middle of the vehicle. As you could see in the picture the seat is made for a small kid at the most. I asked her to get us another vehicle with adequate safe room and she refused and told me to take a taxi at my own expense. So much for transportation being included. I asked to speak to hotel manager Pablo Winkler and she said he wasn't available. I thanked her for ruining the end of our trip and my wife and I and one of the other couple we were traveling with took a taxi to the airport for $40. She was the rudest front desk supervisor I have ever encountered and I have been to Palace resorts over a dozen times in the last few years. Had the front desk manager Veronica done the right thing and provided me with safe transportation to the airport it may have received the highest rating of 5.More
