Lovely winter holiday
We stayed at Sun Palace over New Year 2016/17. Sun Palace is a little removed from the main hub of Cancun and therefore a bit quieter. There is a bus stop right outside though and they are brilliant value for money. 5-10 minutes takes you to La Isla shopping mall, five minutes more to Coco Bongos etc. Check in was quick, we were shown straight to Level 5 in order to check into the concierge level. The rooms are bright, with a wonderfully comfy bed, l'Occitaine toiletries, iPod docks, coffee machine etc. Also hairdryers and hair straighteners are provided. The only issues I had with our room is that even though we were a distance away form the lifts you could still hear the 'bong's and the corridors are incredibly noisy and many nights sleep was disturbed due to noisy guests, presumably coming back from Coco Bongos and other clubs on the strip. We had no issues with getting into any of the restaurants, think our favourite was the Mexican and Steak. Buffet breakfasts and lunches were very good, with a good variety. I must admit on a few nights we did miss not having the option of having a buffet evening meal ...for those nights when we didn't really want a big dinner, but I guess there are the snack options in the lobby bar of paninis etc. A few nights, the weather fell foul to the Steak and Thai restaurants but they are accommodated in the Mexican restaurants. It can be quite windy outside so ladies with long hair .... tie it back! The pool areas are well maintained and the pool waiters were brilliant. Alesandro and Angel work very hard. The main pool areas tend to be quite shaded a lot of the time (bad design there!) so the few sunny beds tend to get snapped up quite earlier. The entertainment staff are brilliant. Enrique, Chocolat's "I loooooove my job", Tony and Pedro are great at their job and do very well and getting people involved with the activities. We will miss their cheery smiles. The evening entertainment on the whole was good - as a British couple we just didn't 'get' the Michael Jackson tribute but all the others, in particular the fire show and circus act were very good. The New Years Eve dinner was fantastic and the party was excellent. The staff did a very good job of dressing the ballroom and it was a really fun, successful night. Thank you for the hard work. I had wondered if NYE might pass quietly by, but Sun Palace really pulled out the stops to make it memorable. We managed to avoid getting harangued about the timeshare stuff and hotel credits - purely because we knew from the outset we did not want them. The hotel won't bother you. We did have 2x25min back massages as part of the concierge package which was thoroughly enjoyable. I dare say if the weather had been poor, I might have taken up some of the credits in the spa. We spoke to a lot of couples that seem have moved to the SP from Moon Palace, which is a compliment to the place and the staff, which are amazing. Thank you SP for a lovely, relaxing break. We'll certainly consider the resort again next time we're in Cancun.More
We love this resort! Great beach, rooms and service!
This was our 4th year back to Sun Palace and we were not disappointed. We booked the concierge level rooms which I highly recommend. The ocean view was amazing from our 4th floor room and you get the beach access to the concierge level only chairs. Our waiter Jose on the beach was amazing. He kept us supplied with cool drinks and always had a big smile the entire day. Marvin at the steak house did a great job the night we went for dinner. The salsa band played as well and the view out outside was beautiful. We enjoyed the lounge bar as well. Elfegain in the lounge bar does a great job in getting you drinks in the afternoons and evenings. The staff could not be more helpful. Rooms are clean and the view is spectacular. We are going back again for our 5th trip next year.More
Annual sister trip
This was the 11th trip for four sisters. Each year one person plans everything and surprises us as we're on the way. This year my one sister booked us at the Sun Palace in Cancun as she is familiar with the property and had stayed at a sister property last year. This is a well maintained property with a lot of staff checking on whether you need anything or to see if you're enjoying yourself. The views are beautiful, with all the food and drink you could possibly consume. If I had to find one negative, it would be checking in. We booked a car to take us directly to the hotel to save time only to find a line and short staffed check in desk. I asked at another area if there was something that could be done to move the line along only to be whisked off to another floor with a private checkin. However, this too took forever as they want to talk about a number of things... all we want to do is get to our room and change and head to the beach. I ran into a similar challenge when I went to the spa to book some services only to find out I had to go to the lobby to guest services and spend time there hearing about the bus and transfers and markets, etc. I think this process could be greatly improved with more people at the check-in desk, providing them with the map and information then. There's a very confusing room credit system. Why not print out and just give the guest the room credit coupon on check-in? I'm assuming the desk should have this. This could save guests anxious to start their vacations at least an hour and prevent a lot of unnecessary confusion. (Why do I have to go to the lobby and wait to sit with someone to book a massage?) Aside from that, we're enjoying the food, views, service, infinity pool, and beautiful weather!More
Pampered week in a beautiful couples-only all-inclusive location
Sun Palace is a lovely hotel done in marble and tile. It's near the south end of the hotel zone on Kukulcan Blvd, which skirts the beach on one side and Cancun's huge lagoon on the other. We stayed in an ocean-facing "junior suite", which is a generous sized and beautifully appointed room with a king single bed. The mattress was the most comfortable one I've ever slept on in a hotel. Service was terrific with the staff unfailingly friendly and the personal trip advisors are essential for understanding the area and its attractions unless you're a veteran traveler there. The beach and the water are beautiful with zero seaweed, although the season meant significant surf and a strong rip tide and the red flags were up all week. The hotel's U-shape blocks any view of adjoining resorts so there's a feeling of remoteness even among the many hotels along the beach. The food was great with good variety between the Mexican, Italian, Asian, and contemporary poolside eating venues on site. You can eat a 6-course meal every night if you wish. Off-site travel is convenient with taxi and city bus stops for main routes R1 and R2 right outside. We definitely plan to go back and would recommend it to a couple of any age.More
A diamond in the rough
My husband and I were tremendously surprised when we arrived inside the Sun palace. The exterior was a little drab, but upon walking through the doors, we were very pleased at the quiet elegance. Smiling and helpful staff. We felt so welcomed. We've stayed at various Palace resorts over a period of 12 years, this resort was just perfect. The check in desk Martin Cano was the first to extend his greetings and his friendly welcome was warm and sincere. Verónica Maldonado supervisor was warm and knowledgeable, showing us rooms for our next visit. She welcomed our questions. Spa, pool, beach, restaurants (inside and out) were not crowded but as expected during high season. Lovely areas to relax. Staff throughout were on the mark! Ready to attend to any need. I can't thank them enough for the wonderful service. We're already making plans for next year! I give them all 5 stars.More
