Holidays to Playacar take you to one of Mexico’s best boutique resorts, with upmarket hotels, private beaches and a championship golf course.
A boutique resort
As resorts go, Playacar is one exclusive number on Mexico’s Mayan Riviera, about an hour’s drive south of Cancun. What you’ve got here is a gated community with a select group of hotels and condos. The place has its own private beaches and an 18-hole championship golf course – and when you want to get out and about, hip Playa del Carmen is right on the doorstep.
White, sandy beaches
The beaches here are some of the best in the Caribbean, with all the white sand and palm trees you could ever want. Each hotel and condo has its own private strip that comes with free sunloungers for guests to use. Windsurfers are in their element, thanks to choppy waves and on-shore winds – which also provide a welcome breeze for sunbathers.
World-class scuba diving
The Mayan Riviera is packed with marine life. You can see it up close by signing up to a scuba diving course at your hotel. Beginners can explore the colourful coral gardens, while more experienced divers can drop down to underwater caverns or swim with sting rays among the remains of a shipwreck. And at nearby Cozumel Island, you’ve got the second-largest coral reef in the world.
Daytrips to Mayan ruins
You’ve got some of the best-preserved Mayan sites within day-tripping distance. A 45-minute drive and you’re at Tulum with its castle-like shrine and Temple of Frescoes, while a bit further at Chichen Itza there’s an impressive pyramid. And if you want an insight into how the ancient Mayans lived, head for the eco-park at Xel-Ha.
