This Hotel is not a 4.5
My wife and I just spent six weeks at Cerro Mar Gardens. The service staff work hard and are friendly. The restaurant food is good and reasonably priced. The view of the ocean from the hotels elevated location is beautiful. The view might be a 4.5 but that's where it ends. The beds are poor quality, hard and uncomfortable. The sofa looks dirty and worn. The TV is small and old. The channels provided offer zero entertainment value. The Internet was free in the lobby but mostly inaccessible. We bought internet for the room but it was slow and you could only use one device at a time. Why provide good free internet when people will pay for bad internet. The front desk staff are stiff and disinterested. They charge to call a cab. They charge for the safe. One glass in our room had a chip. I asked room service to replace it. When we checked out we were charged a euro to replace the glass. C'mon. Nickle and dime policies, budget furniture and amenities make this place a hugely overrated disappointment.More
This hotel although on a steep hill is in a quiet location, 15 min walk to two groceries stories and several bars and restaurants. I have stayed there twice and may do so again however there are some shortcomings, if resolved, could make this the ideal hotel. First the lighting in the place is inadequate for reading, no lamps in the sitting area, low intensity bedside lamps, and just poor intensity overall. Secondly, TV sets are of a 4:3 ratio while the TV signal is 16:9 or hi-definition which results in not being able to see the whole picture being presented. There are 6 or more English channels which is an improvement. Now all that is needed is an upgrade to the TV sets. Although the hotel advertises free internet in the reception it has an extremely low bandwidth which frequently results in being unable to access the internet or emails. The $internet is expensive and not user friendly in terms of logging on. The cleanliness of the hotel is certainly above reproach.More
Nice location, inconsistent services
We recently spent two weeks at this property. First the positives. It is in a nice location within walking distance of the old town and beaches but requiring a walk down and up 90+ steps. A shuttle bus service is also available. Hilly terrain. The building is well maintained both inside and out. The grounds are well looked after, a very nice pool area. The apartments are kept very clean, housekeeping staff are excellent. Kitchen is well equipped with all the essentials. There is a nice restaurant on premises with good choices and prices. We eat there numerous times and service in the restaurant especially from Roberto and Luciano was excellent. The negatives- no basics are provided to get you started, e.g. no dish washing liquid, dishwasher stuff, laundry detergent, paper towels etc. Be prepared as you need to get to the grocery store as soon as you arrive, about a 10-15 minute walk up hill. Beds are not great, no give to them and very stiff. A safe is provided in the room but lock has to be rented. Even though living room was spacious there was only a 19 inch TV that cut off a lot of the picture. Poor quality controller to operate TV. WiFi is free in the lobby and available for a fee in the room. Even taking the paid wifi service it was inconsistent and only one device at a time could be used. Front office staff, especially the males were quite surly at times and not helpful. Room assignments seem to be a problem for them, with many people disappointed with the building they were assigned to (there are at least three buildings) even when they had requested specific buildings and locations. Stayed for four night with some friends as a short getaway and booked it based on other reviews. Our reception upon arrival was shocking, discourteous and unprofessional. If ever you wanted to make a good impression it is when you check in and unfortunately our check in was anything but good. Hidden charges like, Safe, WiFi, swimming caps and lockers for the indoor pool etc, the charges I can live with i just wasn't expecting it. That said the apartment was clean and was well serviced by the maids who did a good job.More
