The Pestana Alvor South Beach has recently opened, and brings a touch of Miami to the Algarve.
This hotel has only recently opened its doors. It’s been designed to mimic the Art Deco properties along the real South Beach in Miami. Expect contemporary interiors, with old-school touches like pyjama-striped wallpaper.
Alvor Beach is right at the foot of this hotel. In fact, you just have to walk through the pool area to reach the fine, creamy sands. The old-world charm of Alvor village is just a 10-minute walk away.

Quirky modern hotel
We booked two weeks in this hotel in April this year, having stayed in the Dom Joao ll next door several times we thought we would have a change. This hotel is two storey and modern being about two years old. Our apartment was a suite of two rooms which we didn't really need as a couple, but assume this was all that was left as we booked late. The main bedroom didn't have wardrobes or drawers, instead there was an open hanging rail and open shelves with baskets to put t shirts in etc. Ok for a night in a Premier inn but not sure it works for a two week holiday, however, we soon got used to it and it added to the overall laid back feel of the hotel. Our room also had a very colourful ceiling mural of synchronised lady swimmers, quirky. The balcony was quite spacious and had a good view of the dunes and estuary as it was on the outside leg of the hotel, it also got the sun for most of the afternoon into early evening which suited us. Breakfast was ok with the usual cereals, juices, cold&hot buffet, but if you wanted any eggs other than scrambled you had to order these separately with a member of staff and it was a lottery whether you got them or not. The milk and yogurts were kept in a domestic fridge which seemed strange for a new hotel. Certain items kept running out and sometimes you had to ask for these items to be replenished, but the staff were lovely and were happy to oblige. The outside areas were very nice with three pools and plenty of sun beds and loungers, but you still had guests reserving beds, especially the canopied ones, with towels despite this being against hotel rules. One of the pools was used frequently by the local gulls who swam and messed in it, but I don't know what can be done to prevent this. The grounds will be great once the landscaping has matured, and they open out on to the walkway and beyond that the beach and sea. Overall a great stay in a wonderful hotel, but be prepared for the quirkiness!More

My third visit so they must be doing something right!
I have been to this hotel three times since September 2016 and would go back again. Here's a summary: Pros: - Lovely decorated, something a bit different to the usual Portuguese hotels. - Friendly staff. They are always smiling and rushing to open doors for you etc. - Idyllic pool area. Lovely sun lounger beds and three pools. My pet hate is a pool where all the sun loungers are lined up round it because then you feel like a spectacle in the pool! this is not the case here. There's lovely fresh mint growing in the pool area/garden and outdoor pillows you can use to make yourself comfy. The nicest pool area I've sat round. - Nice rooms. I love having a balcony but think that the non-balcony rooms are nicer. - Complimentary gin and tonic on arrival. - Great location to beach and boardwalk. - Breakfast on until 11am because who wants to get up early on holiday?! - The hotel is spotless. There is always someone cleaning but not in an annoying/obstructive way. - There's just this lovely relaxing feel about the hotel! - When it rained there were games menus to borrow a board game from reception. We had great fun playing all the old favourite games with gin! - Free wifi was fast. Cons: - Breakfast was a good choice but I felt that sometimes the fruit was a little too ripe. - No life about the hotel at night at all and bar prices are expensive (my husband paid 11 euros for a gin and tonic!). There's no entertainment or an atmosphere about the bar at night. Maybe if they provided some live music/more reasonable drinks it might create a bit more of an atmosphere. They had a multi-coloured 'disco light' at night which was quite funny in an empty bar. - I know I could put the do not disturb sign on the door but I kept forgetting and it got quite annoying to be disturbed when getting ready for dinner every night to see if you need more towels when you could just ring down to reception. - My husband found the music in the seating area annoying. However, it didn't bother me at all and I joked that he's just getting old. - Bed clothes and sheets weren't replaced once during the week. I would have been happy with once. Overall I had a wonderful holiday and I'd definitely go back!More
More child friendly then it looks!
Stayed here with my 2 year old daughter for a week.. Was slightly unsure about whether would be child friendly, but G was treated like a princess from morning til night. One very kind waiter in particular brought her an artistic arrangement of strawberries, toffee sauce etc every morning at breakfast.. v sweet and hospitable.. Excellent selection at breakfast and the hot food was of good quality. Ate lunch a few times at hotel also - Caesar salad and fish cakes were ace... The sea deck restaurant is very handy for dinner if you don't fancy the walk into Alvor, and food was good, but despite its incredible views, was a bit lacking in atmosphere. Perhaps it was just quiet as early in season. Hotel was actually v quiet in the evenings, which suited us perfectly.. 2 yr old G had the dance floor to herself and used it well! Overall would thoroughly recommend this hotel and Alvor more generally. Its v breezy and the sea can be rough, but a beautiful beach and the boardwalk is just fab.. Will be back next April, either to the South Beach or the Pestana Alvor Praia.More

Nice hotel - great staff
We enjoyed our week here in May - lovely hotel and the staff superb . Bar pretty deserted to to high prices compared to alvor village . The breakfast was fine - hot food although more akin to German sausages and bacon than British . Plenty cereal and continental options too and we found the breakfast hot unlike some reviews. The pools were nice and although cold at first they were great after a couple of minutes in the water as was the sea . We are at night in alvor and mainly at Marcos and the Phoenix which both provided great English home cooked meals including Sunday roasts . Overall a very good holiday and taxis into alvor from the hotel only 4e . Also there is a daily free bus from the hotel into portimao .More
Great hotel and service - choose B&B option
A really great 7 night stay for 6 golfing buddies. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Unfortunately we were staying on a half board basis. This meant a chilly walk out to and from the beach restaurant each evening and a menu which was extremely limited for a 7 night stay - there were a significant number of starters and main courses that required 2 to share. If these are eliminated from the menu then the options become extremely restricted - ok for a couple of nights, but 7 - no. On the plus side, on our final night the chef created individual apple crumbles for us to enjoy - as I said, the staff were lovely and did their best to accommodate. However unless the menu changes I would recommend the B&B option and enjoy the options of eating at the various local establishments as the mood takes you. Generally a great location directly on to the boardwalk and beach, plus a choice of short or long walks to enjoy to reach the harbour and centre of Alvor.More
