It's a holiday for the kids, ours had a blast.
Just returned from one week at HV Algarve with our two children (6/7). Our kids had a fantastic time, and we really enjoyed ourselves also. There was a wide range of activities, and overall the place had lots to offer. Would I recommend this resort? Well, if you're looking for a premium, adult-oriented hotel with Instagram-friendly details then maybe not. If you're after somewhere that keeps kids entertained, and longing to come back then yes, definitely. Many of the negative reviews, whilst picking on details that I can certainly associate with, seem to be written by travellers that started their complaint letter before they jumped on the outbound flight. We stayed in a first floor suite in block one, above the restaurant/bar. The room was decent and clean, with a very large balcony. (Floors two and above have much smaller balconies, but a slightly better view.) The room decor/fittings were adequate, with a small kitchen, beds that were fine and a clean bathroom that was fit for purpose. (A better shower would have been welcome.) The activities for the kids were excellent, things to do from 10am through to late, in blocks that give the adults a little time to relax by the pool with a beer. Our kids enjoyed the chocolate party, dinosaur hunt, learning magic tricks and others... the queuing for the sessions (5-15 mins each, for drop-off and collect) was the only minor downside, an improved system for this might increase efficiency and maximise the adult's relaxation - but the team do their best. It should be said at this point that the Kids Club team are great with the little ones, remembering their names is always a great way to make them feel involved! This is a great place for kids to make friends, and this in turn helped us to make our own grown-up friends... Other activities include the Aerial Adventure high ropes and zip wire. Again, the staff on here were great - our kids had a number of turns on this. You need to be on the ball to book this, by queuing the morning before - but other reps/team members sometimes jumped in to help you avoid queuing... There are a number of pools, across the two buildings. The quiet pool at block 2 seemed tranquil, the bigger block 1 pool was lively, and the splash pools in front of block 1 was always busy and good fun. There are slides to keep the kids entertained all day. Not huge ones, but certainly exciting enough to maintain interest. As noted above, we were in block 1, and visited block 2 for the restaurants and supermarket. This block is only a couple of minutes walk away. The supermarket itself well stocked with pretty much anything you might want to buy whilst here (bottled water, fresh food, beer, pool toys...) Food... the buffet was decent. I can understand why some have a whinge here, but having been on a number of AI holidays, I'd say it was typical. A good selection of roast meats, vegetarian options, salads and seafood. I enjoyed pork chops and fresh prawns one evening, belly pork and stuffed tomatoes another. Breakfast was, typically, the same every day, but certainly enough choice to avoid boredom in one week. We ate at the Italian one evening, enjoying steak and pizza (plus a reasonably priced bottle of decent local wine), but skipped our Portuguese reservation as the kids wanted to go to the entertainment, rather than dine a la carte. As above, our view was that this was the kids' holiday, rather than our own. The restaurant is busy, indeed. We never felt it was overcrowded, as such, although you might want to be selective with your dining time if you want some peace and quiet. The drinks choice was modest, with San Miguel on draft, and boxed wines. A number of (very sweet) fruit drinks and the usual fizzy pre-mix options are available, plus water coolers around the place. If you enjoy cocktails, you might be slightly disappointed here, as whilst the AI menu includes mojitos, daiquiris and more, these are pre-mixed versions that aren't exactly premium. No, actually, they're awful. The splash pool has a snack bar, serving drinks and burgers/hot dogs/fries. Another review seemed disgusted at the plastic plates/cutlery. I can't see how this would overshadow a holiday, but I observed that it was wasteful at the time. Also, that same review noted overflowing waste bins. This was, to an extent, true - but not to the point of creating a hazard or problem. The food here was good, with decent choice including bifanas (Portuguese pork rolls), burgers, wraps, salads and hot dogs. Not gourmet stuff, but perfectly fine for poolside snacks. Staff were pleasant, polite and helpful throughout. From the hotel FOH staff, to the First Choice reps, kids club and football coaches. We engaged with them frequently, and they always tried to help, whatever the situation. It's fair to say that many of them are young, with varying levels of experience. Noise levels weren't a problem for us, despite having a room adjacent to the main bar area (and pool tables/air hockey table which you could hear during the day if you returned to the room.) We found that the hum dipped after 11.00, so this didn't cause us any issues at all. The HV site is somewhat out of the way. There are beaches a short walk away, although we didn't go down there. We did get a cab into Albufeira, one evening which was a pleasant trip. A tuk tuk ride back made it a memorable evening for the kids. €8 for a cab into town, €15 for the tuk tuk back. Quite acceptable. On the whole, we had a very enjoyable holiday at HV Algarve. To clarify my point above.. if your visit to this type of resort is to 'take one for the team', then you'll love it, and your kids will not want to leave. If you're expecting a Marriott or Hilton experience with white glove service and embroidered bathrobes, then you might want to look elsewhere.More
Lovely family holiday thanks to the staff!
My wife and I recently spent a week at HV Algarve with our 4 year old girl and baby boy. Although slightly disappointed in the resort as a whole compared to a previous HV stay at the Seaview HV in Ibiza, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, mainly thanks to the wonderful reps! I will get the negatives out of the way first; unheated pools, too cold to be properly inviting! The beach isn't really accessible either if you're taking young ones unless you go by taxi, it's only a 20 minute (hilly) walk, but in the heat, with a pushchair, beach stuff and a hot and tired 4 yr old it's not really accessible and the tide is strong, knocking adults off their feet in knee-deep water. The food isn't great but there's plenty of choice. Despite this, I would recommend HV Algarve because of the staff, they really made our holiday and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. All the reps were amazing but I have to make a special mention for Carolyn, a fab swimming instructor who taught our little girl to swim and gain so much confidence in the water, she was so friendly and chatty, always making a fuss of our children whenever we bumped into her, in the pool and out! She's a proper gem and my daughter still talks about her! Special mentions also for Ben, Rachel and Gavin on the entertainment team for being so nice, friendly, accessible, and well, entertaining! Paige and Charlie at crèche/kids club were so nice, fantastic with our children, brilliant at their jobs and our kids loved them. We ould also like to say a special thank you to Thierry, at the hotel restaurant who was so pleasant and remembered everyone's name! We thoroughly enjoy the HV's because they're so good for families, all inclusive makes it so easy, we just put our brains into neutral and relax which is what a holiday is all about sometimes! The entertainment is fab, the daytime activities are fun and you aren't pressurised to join in! The kids loved the splash pools, water slides and play park, next time we stay at a HV our daughter will be able to make use of the high ropes course which she is looking forward to! Food is varied and plentiful, the hotels are clean, rooms are spacious, Our family will definitely stay at more HV's over the years and we hope to bump into Carolyn and everyone sometime in the future!More
Great Location for Family Holiday
We found the Hotel Light and Airy, facilities were good, swimming pools both clean and well managed. Food was OK and the themed restaurants were also very good. Kids club was well run, but it did tend to fill up quickly at busy/popular periods so early queing was sometime necessary. the one on one swimming lessons were great for the kids Got a phut-phut into the town on a few occasions and went to the beach there which was gorgeous. There are a few things about the holiday village that could be improved but at the end of the day, you get what you pay for and we thought this was good value for money.More
terrible on so many levels: Four star aspirations
Ok so i write a number of reviews for places i visit. I work away from home and travel a lot so like to share my experiences and hope other people can benefit from my experience. I have left my review several weeks so that i could calm down from my visit to this hotel which should speak volumes on its own. So lets start with the hotel. It is not a four star, perhaps it was back in the 80s but it is not now. The food at best is ok but needs a lot to desire. The buffet is hit and miss and i must admit lunch seems to be the best time to eat there. Evening food was not a four star standard sorry. The two themed restaurants whilst the staff are the best onsite and need rewarding for this the food was not that good. If your booking here i can say with confidence if you like good food head out there are much better places to eat. So the site it self is great for kids although i would argue not that safe, trip hazards, electric wiring showing and hardly any safety. I wanted to say it was like a Butlins 1980s resort but at least they locked you in, children can walk around freely and offsite with no one stopping them. Equally general public can walk onsite and again no one stops them. Lots of things to do for kids and it is very in your face which will be fine for many. Now onto the rooms. Small and dirty. We booked a suit and had a twin room where the crammed three beds into one room. They moved the bedside table onto the balcony so they could fit us in. This resulted in suitcases needing to be stored in the bathroom. We asked if we could upgrade and expected to pay but was told that the hotel may get bookings that week and they could not upgrade us, may get booking and i was standing there offering to pay! They went on to say with a smile well its a good job your not in the room that much. See our picture when we got to our rooms the beds were not even made! That gets onto the staff. Most are not nice at all, some are helpful but not overly. The team down at the pool bar in phase two we as good as you get. The management team were just rude and did not want to deal with anything and pushed you back to the holiday reps the holiday reps kept saying there was nothing they could do and push you back to the hotel. Finally Internet if that is what you could call it. 1meg connection was what i tested over multiple days. When asked at reception if there was anything they could do i got told not, they only offered internet because they had too! Personally we would go back to the area again but not this hotel and not with First ChoiceMore
The hotel complex was of the highest quality - spacious stylish rooms , great facilities including several pools , football and tennis courts. Staff were fantastic - both the locals and Thomson reps and the entertainment and activities were everything the kids could want . Last but very much not least the all inclusive beer was San Miguel - great holiday More
