An amazing week in the HV Algarve
Just back from an amazing week in the HV Algarve (also known as Alto de Colina). First off, the bad: this hotel is not going to be a First Choice holiday village from next year which is a crying shame as this is a truly outstanding family hotel. My only other gripe is the handling of breakfast on departure day. Our bus was picking us up at 6:50am and we were asked to be at the collection point outside the hotel with all our luggage by 6:35am. We were staying in block 2 so had to walk up to block 1 for breakfast – obviously we didn’t want to check out and haul our luggage across the length of the resort so left them in our room ahd headed for breakfast at 6am, only wanting some cereal and a drink. However, we were refused entry into breakfast until 6:20am, which meand we didn’t have time to eat anything as it would give us 15 minutes to eat our food, walk back to the room, get our luggage, check out at reception (which includes returning your towels and tv remote!) and get to the pick up point. Poorly executed on behalf of First Choice and/or the hotel there. On a positive note, though, pretty much everything else about this hotel ROCKED. Firstly, those reviews complaining about the food. WHAT ON EARTH??? The food here is outstanding! Anything and everything is provided, from traditional Mediterranean through to British food including a good old Sunday roast complete with Yorkshire Puddings! The food was delicious, including starters and deserts. Tables were cleared promptly and there was nothing at all I could fathom people could complain about. The hotel even lets you take a carrier bag and fill it with food if you’re going on excursions, and they give you free bottles of water to take! There are about 4 or 5 pools, all of which are awesome fun. The splash pool is brilliant for children of all ages with both bigger and smaller slides for them to enjoy. The larger pools are deep enough that you can dive in and have a good splash about or play with a ball and they all have snack bars in close proximity. In the evening you’re treated to the excellent HV entertainment team who put on a great show for the kids. The evening stars with Peppa Pig on the big screen for the littler guests to enjoy, followed by the Live & Loud show which consts of fun and games, audience participation and a good old boogie. At 9pm this ends and the adult entertainment begins. In addition to this there is football academy, splash academy (swimming lessons) and stage academy, the latter of which which our daughter did and absolutely loved doing. The staff were great and as with all the kids clubs, they are very security and safety conscious so even the really, really anxious parents like myself need not worry at all! Theres also a great on-site crèche with really bubbly and caring staff who can look after the younger guests and the range of activities in the kids club is immense – our eldest wanted to go all the time and we had to coax her into staying and spending some quality time with us! Lol All in all, this really is a truly brilliant hotel. The best family hotel we’ve ever been to and we’d definitely go back if it remained a holiday village. If you’ve booked to go then you’re in for a treat or if you are interested in Self Catering then book this for next year as its absolutely superb. Oh, and one last tip: Get a taxi into the old town - its absolutely gorgeous with lots to do, amazing bars and a superb beach. Really is one of the best places we've been abroad.More
Great for Kids
We flew from Luton and arrived at Faro on time. Baggage claim and customs were fine. Found the reps who directed us to our coach and were transferred to our hotel in around 45 mins. The hotel is called "Alto da Colina". We had a corner room on the first floor and it did have an OK view of the sea. The place is bigger than I thought it was going to be. The only problem with our room was the drain/sewer stink that came into the bathroom from the air blown in from what looked like an extractor fan (it was worse at night), I hope you don't get block 1 room 102 ! The Reps are friendly and helpful. The Kids Club is great with sessions running from 10am to 10pm. Most of them were free. There are also activities which cost money, our youngest(5) benefited from the swimming academy. Our oldest(8) did the stage academy which runs during peak season and got to perform on the main stage which was great. There is also a football academy which we didn't use. These activities are great as the kids have fun and you get to spend some time away from them. I think the clubs only cater for up to 11 year olds. We only spent one day at the main Pool and this is where rep led activities go on. Most of the sun loungers have a towel on by 8am. There is also a quieter pool at block 2 which is a short distance away. There is also a splash pool which is great for under 10's, there is a slide area, a pool and a water splash area. There is a cafe there which does some food, ice creams, drinks etc. The main restaurant is a buffet and I found there was plenty of choice. The coffee was pretty poor from the self service machines. There was plenty of pudding choice, but they were quite average. We never had a problem finding a table. There are also an Italian and Portuguese restaurant which we were allowed to go to once each as we were all inclusive, it made a change from the buffet, but wasn't superior. It was reasonably quiet there at night, only on Saturday night was there noise from a nearby hotel's cabaret. The evening entertainment was great for the kids. I left most days before the adult entertainment started. We did a couple of excursions. Zoomarine was around half an hour away and is a good day out, I found the Dolphin show a bit boring as I've seen the same kind of thing before. The wave pool is a bit tame after Siam Park in Tenerife. We also did the pirate family day which after being on a coach for about an hour, you get to go on the Ophelia Catamaran and sail up the coast to a beach and have a BBQ and swim. On the beach You can see shells in the cliff walls which are I think from the Miocene Epoch. They also take the catamaran into some of the caves along the shore which is fun, especially when they accidentally hit the cliff side. There is a local beach a short walk from the hotel which is nice, but a bit busy. The return coach took about 45 mins to get to the airport and about the same to get through to the departure gate (it was busy, but not too bad).More
Great for younger children
Travelled late June as a family of 4 with grandparents, not the best holiday village I have visited sadly 😞 , where to start.......Nice easy transfer from airport..... Airport was chaotic !! Easy check in on arrival and room was ready thankfully, we had been advised on the coach that in the algarve check in is 3pm, pack your case accordingly. Lovely spacious family room in main block overlooking the rear panoramic view over the golf course lovely and quiet , no problems at all with cleanliness. If you want a sunbed within view of the pool for the kids your going to have to be up early !! We we're lucky enough to have grandparents with us. We found on the whole the food quality was good, lot's of pork though, good salad bar and nice breakfast, drinks are self service in the restaurant. I feel restaurant could have been cleaner I always noticed food on the floor under tables which was a bit off putting and sometimes had to find your own cutlery, unfriendly staff. Indoor evening entertainment poor I didn't notice any cleaning done the whole evening plastic glasses and spillages every where, not what you expect from a holiday village sadly. Although this hotel is in a built up area there's nothing around it to walk too we paid€10 each way to albuifera for a minibus. Would I visit again? No .More
Only book here if you have younger children
We have just returned from an 11 day stay. One huge downside for us was that we have a 17 and 19 year old and this holiday is designed for far younger children. I would say that we met only 2 other couples with kids the age of our own - I'm sure there would have been others - but the place was full of kids from babies to 10 or 11 years of age - and they all appeared to have a whale of a time. This place is set up for that kind of family, but if you don't have kids in that age bracket then don't book. Food - really good, plenty of choice, well made and varied - yes, it gets a bit samey after a few days but a) you haven't got to cook it and b) you don't do the washing up! Drinks - rubbish I'm afraid. Beer allegedly was San Miguel - if so it was 2 parts beer and 3 parts water. Spirits much the same. Biggest issue here is that you are limited to only 2 alcoholic drinks per person per visit to the bar - if I wanted 3 then I had to either make 2 trips or take my wife or daughter to get one - pathetic - really not a great customer experience Pools - 2 of them - a quiet pool which was nice and a larger pool area where there is constant music, games and general mayhem. Also a large slide and fun area for the kids, which we stayed clear of! Sun beds a bit of an issue - signs everywhere saying do not reserve - most were by 8am! Entertainment - the reps worked really hard and from what I could see did a sterling job. The evening "entertainment" was woeful - don't bother. Rooms - ours was a good size and comfortable. Cleaning rather dubious, as were the pool and bar areas - a bit more focus here would have helped. Beach nearby was nice and only a 15 min walk. Overall an enjoyable stay but would have liked to have been told about the demographics before I went.More

Lovely family holiday
We visited here in July for a week with our 11 year old. We had a lovely holiday, the staff were very friendly and helpful. We were all inclusive and found the choice of food and quality to be excellent, each day they had a different selection. Our apartment was overlooking the pool and had a sea view in the distance. The apartment was clean, spacious and the cleaners came in daily. The beach is about 15 minutes walk or the hotel has a shuttle bus service also. The first choice kids club was very well organised and they had something for everyone. Overall we had a brilliant holiday and would recommend this holiday village for 2017. More
