Nice apartments, but terrible restaurant
The rooms and service was great. All the staff was helpful and pleasant. Overall very clean and nice. During our stay we ate mostly at local restaurants, but we also had dinner at the restaurant in the hotel. Both times were a disappointment. The worst was our second time when we had the Chateaubriand for two. It is one of the most expensive items on their menu, and we ordered it medium rare. We had not had much luck with meat so far in Portugal. I said to my girlfriend, what can they possibly do wrong here. What came back was a gray piece of meat with the taste of being wrapped too long. When the waitress came to inquire about our meal, the meat was left on our plates, and we expressed our disappointment about how it was cooked. We were offered desert, but declined, and just decided to finish our wine. We knew who the manager/owner was and he was in the restaurant that night. After we complained we could see that there was some talk among the staff. The manager came out and proceeded to make the rounds in the restaurant, pouring water and chatting with the patrons, but ignoring us completely We went up to the bar to settle our bill, the manager was made aware of who we were and came over. His concern was about our comments about the odor of the meat, and wanted to assure us of his deliveries by presenting receipts of delivery and such. We said that this was not the main issue, but showed him a picture of our mutilated steaks. Asked him if that looked like medium rare. He did not comment, and said he could do nothing more for us. We never had breakfast there, but have been told that this was good by some of our traveling companions. Our advice, enjoy the hotel/apartments, but stay away from the restaurant for dinner. Enjoy the local restaurants instead.More
Jan Erik D,
Definitely not a 4 star hotel!
First of all I have to say that all the staff at the hotel were very friendly, the rooms were big and spacious and the location was perfect so close to the beach. But it is NOT a 4 star hotel more like a 2 or 3 star hotel. The standard was simple and it felt like a hotel that has already seen it's best days and is slowly deteriorating. STAY AWAY FROM THE RESTAURANT!!! We had ordered half pension but that was a big mistake, the food was really really bad, at breakfast they served for example egg powder and machine coffee, do I need to say more. For dinner we were served overcooked food in small portions, most of it tasted like it came from frozen products, nothing fresh. The children's food were mostly served after our food, that I think also says it all, normally in a restaurant it is always the opposite. One night my wife complained when we had waited for the food for over 45 minutes and the children waited even longer for theirs. The restaurant manager actually started to argue with my wife and defend this wait.More
Great Apartment - Shame about the food
This is a great apartment. Nice and big. Cleaned every day. Great air conditioning. Towels for beach available from reception. Location is great if you want a quiet holiday. Located right next to beach. Great pool, plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas. There are a few bars/restaurants beside apartment and a local Spar shop. If you want to go into main area you have to walk on a non paved road (unless you walk on side of motorway). The promanade, when you reach it, is lovely and it is a great stroll to plenty of pubs, restaurants and shops/stalls. Only remember you have to walk home and it is a pretty lonely road with little lighting. The main disappointment on this holiday was the food. We stayed half board. The first night we ate at the buffet at the pool. Food was cold - even though we ate as soon as food came out - and it was inedible. Second night we ate in the restuarant. Again food was lukewarm and disgusting. We complained to the catering manager (Matius). He said there was nothing he could do and that it was up to us whether we ate the food or not. Have never met this attitute before where the manager doesnt care but it also comes across in the service by the staff in the restaurant and on reception. I would really recommend this holiday but only if you go self catering.More
Spent a lovely 7 days in JdV and thoroughly enjoyed it. Lovely location and apartment had everything we needed and was well maintained throughout visit. The location is stunning next to the sea and fortunately we had wall to wall blue skies throughout visit. Loved the main pool which was very deep and had a dip every morning to waken me up. Pool bar fine with selection of beers, cocktails and wines again with pleasant staff. Laundry facilities brilliant. The restaurant and bar were very quiet when we were there and we ventured to Alvor for most of our meals, although some reasonable eating places nearby. Shop attached to complex but would have liked a wider variety of breads in morning but accept this is nick picking. Will deffo be back.More
We really enjoyed our stay! Very spacious apartment. We stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment. It was very clean and well maintained. The pool area is very nice. Location is excellent too. Very close to the beach and a nice walk to Praia da rocha. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend staying here.More
