Regimentation at Monica spoils holiday
Not ideal holiday venue as silly rules and regulations get in the way. Well refurbished building is spoiled by the management, eg: Al a carte restaurant has only three main dish choices which NEVER change; breakfast is until 10.30 but they start clearing away food before then as the staff 'have homes to go to'; extra charge for room safe; some poor quality food ingredients (prunes, figs, fish); do not walk on the grass (red / white incident tape used to stop you); no room toiletries; works canteen approach to dinner in the main dining room. It's a shame as with a bit more flexibility it could be a much better experience. They should take some soundings from guests to improve the experience. Very nice pool but one thing they can't change is that the hotel really needs a bit more space to allow guests to spread out and get some privacy. Using the grass might be a start? More
Perfect place for some winter sun!!!!!
We enjoyed a week stay at the Riu Monica in February and found it the perfect place to enjoy some winter sun. The hotel had clearly been recently refurbished and was spotlessly clean. For some it will definitely have lost its Spanish charm but it is an impressive makeover and our room was lovely and big with a nice side sea view balcony. The restaurant was very nice and we both thought the quality and choice of food was excellent. Plenty of tables and although they are a little close together it never felt too intrusive. Two meal sittings which means you have to be a little rigid in your plans but it does work and the restaurant seems to cope even when busy. It also means you know you have a table secured - just make sure you're happy with it!!!! Pool area was lovely but just a little too chilly to sit out at too often. Can imagine it might be a little crowded in the summer but even then, you have a lovely beach right on your doorstep!!! We both loved Nerja. Certainly more authentic than many of the resorts on this coast and probably just a touch more relaxed too. Yes it's fairly quiet but even in February there were plenty of bars and restaurants open to enjoy a nice sit outside and watch the world go by. Frigiliana is an absolute must visit. A Euro or two on the bus and ten minutes later you're in the most beautiful cliff top village. Granada was also lovely but difficult via public transport and hence a car or an organised trip is your best bet. Went with Thompson. Expensive but convenient and a good trip. We'll definitely visit again for some winter sun and when we do, I'd happily stay again at the Riu Monica. More
Fabulous staff in a lovely location
The staff at this hotel make this a wonderful place to stay. They are very welcoming and appear to really enjoy being with their customers. Nothing is too much trouble. The hotel is in a good location for both access to the beach and the town. The refurbishment in the public areas has made a massive difference and the hotel seems much more spacious and airy. My only gripe is that I wish they had made the bedrooms more sound proof because unfortunately not only can you hear every conversation , but you are also able to hear everyone using their bathroom facilities! The restaurant offers a wide selection of food and as a vegetarian I was able to find dishes most nights which were of a good quality. The staff in the restaurant are lovely always smiling and always working. Unfortunately there is still the great British tradition of getting up at the crack of dawn to reserve the best spot around the pool, one tradition I did not indulge in and therefore it was often difficult to find sunbeds in the prime locations after 10:00 am. The pool area and grounds are beautifully kept, with staff maintaining these areas throughout the day. The entertainment in the evening is mixed with the best entertainer by a country mile being Ricky Lavazza who has an amazing voice. If you are looking for a relaxing holiday in a very Spanish area of the Costa Del Sol, visit this hotel and you won't be disappointed.More

Lovely 10 day stay
Enjoyed a lovely 10 night stay at the Riu Monica. Lovely clean hotel and service very good. Wifi really good. I think there should be tea making facilities in the room, and don't think you should have to pay for a safe in a 4* hotel. Half board was very nice with lots of choice but did get a bit repetitive after a time. If you go, try the Spanish restaurant on site, as it made a nice change and was really lovely. Drinks were expensive on site but very reasonable in bars over the road. A 10 minute walk into the old town is a must. It was very busy with lots going on, buzzing and great atmosphere.More

lovely hotel lacking character
It is difficult to sum up this hotel. The staff were always polite and willing, the food was very good and it was spotlessly clean but it lacked character and a feeling of being welcome. We felt everything was quite clinical. It was so quiet around the pool. The lay out of the hotel doesn't help. There isn't one lift that goes from top to bottom. You have to walk down corridors and get a different lift to the pool. Pool bar stops serving food at 3 and closes at 7. Little things like no toiletries in rooms, no tea/coffee making in rooms, no water served with dinner would make a difference. DisappointingMore
