From the glass of champagne and warm welcome on arrival, we loved every minute of our stay at the Riu Monica. The hotel is modern, fresh and spotlessly clean. It's in a great location - opposite a number of bars, cafes, restaurants and shops and an easy 10-15 minute stroll to the main resort centre. It's also literally right on the beach and we could see the ocean and hear the waves of the sea from our room, which was lovely. The room itself (22) was superb - the best balcony we've ever had in a hotel, with glass panels which give great views of the pool area and the beach. The rooms are spacious and are equipped with a good size fridge. Just take note that there is no kettle in the room and, gentlemen, there is no shaving point in the bathroom, although there is a power socket, so you'll just need to take your adaptor plug to shave. The dining room is great, again with lovely views out and also a terrace for outdoor eating. Breakfast was really good - pretty much everything you could want to choose from was there, both hot and cold. Dinner was also great. We usually prefer to eat out on holiday but as we were half-board, we ate at the hotel a number of times and it was always very good. You get allocated a table to keep for the duration of your stay at one of the two sittings (6:30pm or 8:15pm) and there is a really great variety of dishes which change each night. We tried most things and my favourite dishes were the beef stroganoff and the paella. A lovely selection of desserts each night, too. There is also the Ole restaurant downstairs, which looked really nice and has a different menu (I think it is also included in the half-board) but we didn't eat here during our stay. We had lunch at the pool bar on a couple of occasions and enjoyed it very much. Again, lovely views of the pool and beach and a good selection of lunch food, including pastas, sandwiches and salads. You can also design your own personal dessert here! There was entertainment each night in the bar area. Not really our cup of tea but other guests really seemed to enjoy it. Other facilities include a decent gym, indoor pool and massage treatments. Overall, I could not fault this hotel - it really is excellent and the staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend the Hotel Riu Monica to anyone visiting Nerja.More
RIU MONICA;sunny and comfortable february break
I enjoyed the renovated Riu Monica the last 2 weeks of february 2017.The hotel looked even better than the fist time I stayed there in 2015 before the renovations. The only negative for me were the noise-levels at my room 232 on the second floor. The other guest at my corridor didn't try to close their doors silently but instead chose to let the doors fall back with a noisy bang. On my first stay I stayed at a very peacefull room at the 7th floor, the room was then carpeted and much lower noise levels. At the few cold, rainy and cloudy days the noise was more of an issue as on sunny february days I was mostly out and about and between midnight and 7a.m. there was usually silence. Staff were very efficient and hardworking, gardens and hotel very well kept and clean. The buffet at 18.00 or 20.15 was festive and plentiful though many desserts and sauces were ready bought tasting bland and made industrially with low cost ingredients. However for the price paid it was more than satisfactionary and there was always at least something that was delicious. I travelled a lot by Alsa bus to Marbella,Ronda,Malaga,Almunecar,Frigiliana,Punta de la Mona-La Herradura,Granada. The hotel is a 15-20minute walk from the bus-stop and only 10 minutes from Nerja centre-Balkon de Europa. Torrecilla Beach was a delight on sunny february days;the water was 15degrees but I enjoyed my daily swim and sunbath on the white marble pebbles. Transfer to Malaga Airport about 1hour.More

This was our 4th time at the Riu Monica and there are very many other regular users of this great hotel which in its self speaks volumes! This time I would like to express our thanks to the unsung heroes who keep this hotel at the forefront of people's choice namely the legions of cleaners, chamber maids and also the kitchen staff who help the chefs prepare vast quantities of good quality food etc, The public places and toilets in all areas of the hotel are always immaculately clean and well presented including our room which was always cleaned and made up daily with clean towels etc! This is not meant to take away anything from the usual customer facing staff such as waiters, bar staff and reception staff who are all excellent but more of a thank you and acknowledgment to the people you don't usually see but who make a great difference to the quality of your holiday! Please keep up the high standards RiuMore
Last minute Easter break!
Took the decision last minute to book a week in Nerja staying at the Riu Monica. We were not disappointed! We booked a private transfer from Malaga airport and arrived at the hotel within 40 minutes. Check in was easy - handed a glass of fizz whilst doing this (which was nice!). Our room was perfect - on the fourth floor with a great sea view. Pool area was excellent, spacious with plenty of sunbeds. We were half-board so just breakfast and dinner included. Plenty of food choice for all tastes at both meal times. We did have one or two negative feedbacks...... Men were asked to wear long trousers for dinner, which was acceptable if other diners adhered to similar dress code. This was not the case.... Denim jackets, scruffy jeans, ladies in beach shorts..... One poor guy turned up in very nice calf length tailored shorts, only to be turned away and asked to get changed. Behind him was a lady in beach shorts who was allowed in without question. No equality here I'm afraid! The only other issue was service - there was not enough staff. The pool area did have waiters/waitresses but they were few and far between. As was the case with grumpy waiters at breakfast. We asked for coffee one morning only to have the pot slammed down on the table. Not good. One evening we booked the Tapas Restaurant which was excellent - service was very good - wished we had booked it for more nights!More
This was my 3rd visit to Nerja, but my first stay in the Monica. Fantastic hotel, spotlessly clean and staff all very friendly and helpful. The manager was regularly seen walking around and came into the dining room to speak to the guests. Looking forward to returning for Christmas and new year. More
