Holidays to Playa del Cura will slow things down to a crawl, with quiet beaches and a scattering of traditional restaurants.
Off the beaten track
Playa del Cura might not have the buzz of its lively neighbour Puerto Rico, but its pretty, secluded setting more than makes up for things. It’s a forget-your-troubles kind of place, with a peaceful stretch of sand and a couple of Canarian restaurants dotted about. You’ll still see hotels and villas on the hills, but things are scaled down and far less touristy.
Daytrips along the coast
There’s plenty going on along Gran Canaria’s coastline. Puerto Rico has three jumbo shopping centres if you fancy some retail therapy, and its bar scene is among the best around. For some impressive holiday snaps, check out the famous sand dunes at Maspalomas – they’re half an hour’s drive away, at the island’s most southern point.
Future holiday hotspot
Tauro Beach, just a couple of minutes’ walk from Playa del Cura, is definitely one to watch. A major tourism project has been given the go-ahead, which could see the construction of a carpet of new hotels and shops, plus a marina and a beach promenade. Make the most of it while it’s still a relative unknown, as this quiet spot might become Gran Canaria’s next go-to beach.
