Holidays to San Agustin mean laid-back fun, uncrowded beaches and top local food. And there’s a killer waterpark on the doorstep too.
The original Canarian getaway
San Agustin was one of the first resorts on Gran Canaria back in the Seventies. But this quiet little spot on the island’s south coast hasn’t got ideas above its station – it’s an easy-going, laid-back kind of place that deals in uncrowded beaches. And if you do want to ramp up the pace, you’ve always got party-loving Playa del Ingles next door.
A trio of beaches
You get 3 beaches for the price of one here. They’re split by sweeps of headland, and the super-soft sand changes colour along the strip from golden to black. You get a few rocky patches, too. You’ll find plenty of sunloungers, and the beach trio is linked by a promenade dotted with shops and al fresco cafes.
They like their water round these parts. You can dunk yourself in state-of-the-art seawater treatments at the swanky thalassotherapy centre in the Gloria Palace Hotel. And nearby you’ve got the Aqualand Maspalomas waterpark – it’s got 33 slides, from the mini-land Polynesia for young ones to the hair-raising Tornado.
Close to Las Palmas
Forty minutes’ drive and you’re in Gran Canaria’s capital, Las Palmas. There’s a lot to pack in here. For a start there’s the Vegueta Quarter, all cobbled streets and a cathedral where you can take a lift to the top for a city view. You’ve also got the Triana district – it’s the main shopping drag and it’s packed with big chain stores and up-scale boutiques.
