Resort-wise, Playa de los Pocillos is a bit of an introvert. This purpose-built place on Lanzarote’s east coast is all about toned-down holidays that put the emphasis on R&R. You don’t have to dial things down all the time, though. This spot is big on windsurfing and away from the beach you’ve got lively Puerto del Carmen just down the road.
You’ve got about 1 kilometre’s worth of golden beach to play with. It slopes gently into calm, shallow waters so it’s good for families with small children. You’re well-connected here, too – a prom stacked with shops, cafés and restaurants runs both ways, to Puerto del Carmen in the south and pretty Matagorda to the north.
When it comes to families, Playa de los Pocillos plays its bonus ball – many of the restaurants here offer free dinners for kids if you come in the early evening. As for the day, you’ve got Rancho Texas Park about 10 minutes’ drive from the resort. It’s a Wild West experience with gold-panning and pony rides, plus bird of prey shows on the side.
Day trips to the capital
Fifteen minutes’ drive gets you to Lanzarote’s cosmopolitan capital, Arrecife. The boutiques here keep shoppers happy, while sightseers get museums and a duo of forts. There’s also a saltwater lagoon ringed by whitewashed buildings and friendly restaurants serving up the catch of the day.
