Holidays to Puerto Calero serve up head-turning sea views, a glamorous marina, and an air of quiet sophistication. And you can take a tour of the sea – by submarine.
A cut above the rest
Take 1 classy marina, add in a clutch of luxury hotels, boutique shops and waterfront restaurants, and Puerto Calero is what you get. Set on the southwest coast of Lanzarote, this purpose-built resort has been taking shape since the Eighties and now it’s a picture of quiet sophistication. Despite its air of exclusivity, though, it’s still a hit with the tourist crowd.
The marina really is the resort’s centrepiece. Nicknamed Millionaire’s Harbour, it’s packed with yachts with euro-million price tags. You can easily spend a couple of hours here relaxing over a coffee at one of the waterfront cafés. It’s also the jump-off point for catamaran cruises that will take you along the coast to neighbouring Playa Blanca and the beaches of Papagayo.
Puerto Calero doesn’t have a beach of its own – but 5 minutes’ drive away you’ve got a trio at Puerto del Carmen. The biggest is Playa Grande. This sandy stretch has a stash of sunbeds, and vendors will come round selling ice-creams and even massages. Windy Playa Pocillos is popular with kite flyers, while little Playa Chica is a secluded spot with shallow waters.
Easy day trips
A 40-minute bus ride gets you to the capital, Arrecife. It’s a cosmopolitan kind of place with high-end stores and bijou boutiques. You’ve also got a couple of museums and 2 forts to look around here. Twenty minutes further on at Taro de Tahiche, you can visit the former home of the island’s famous architect, Cesar Manrique. Curiously, his pad is made from volcanic lava.
