Relaxing enjoyable holiday
My wife and I have just returned from a 10 day holiday in Tenerife staying in the Colon II apartments, Las Americas. As there was just the 2 of us we stayed in a studio apartment (110) situated on the ground floor. We have visited Tenerife before but this was the first time that we actually stayed in a central hotel. We booked on-line and travelled with Thompson Holidays and all the communication and travel arrangements were good. The Thompson reps were excellent and it was very well organised and the coach pickups worked well. I believe the hotel might be solely used by Thompson customers. Colon II is situated in the centre of Las Americas, but the apartments themselves are set well back from the road. At the front is a small café/restaurant and you need to walk through this area to the main reception. Our studio apartment was spacious, clean and well designed. We had a separate reasonable size bathroom with a bath/shower, sink and toilet. There was adequate storage space in the cupboards in the hallway and the rest of the apartment was large with a half wall divide separating the sleeping/relaxing area from the kitchen facilities. Apart from drinks and a few snacks we did not use the kitchen but it had plenty of cupboard space and worktop surfaces and also a small table with 2 chairs. In addition there was a 2 ring hob and microwave oven, and adequate saucepans, cups, plates, cutlery etc. They also provided a T towel but you need to supply washing up liquid. There was also a reasonable patio area with wooden table and chairs, but the chairs could have done with soft cushions. It was quite a comfortable apartment but there were some âconsâ:- 1. No soap or shampoo is supplied so you need to take or buy your own; 2. There is a safe in the room but it costs 15 euros a week for use; 3. There is a tv in the room, but again this costs 10 euroâs a week to rent a card and although there are about 9 English speaking channels, the tv reception was sometime disrupted: 4. The outlook from the patio area of our apartment was not that great, we were looking at a very high security fence about 20 ft away, the lower half of the fence was covered with that green privacy type of mesh. On the other side of the fence was a wide public footpath which led up between the apartments and hotels. In hindsight an apartment overlooking the pool area would have been much better; 5. Although traffic noise did not really penetrate the apartment complex, the public path outside our apartment was quite busy both day and night, and noisy revellers can disturb the sleep; 6. The hard beds were the main problem. Other reviews have mentioned them, but the beds are very hard and not that comfortable. I can sleep most places but my wife was in a great deal of discomfort and pain. The pillow was also uncomfortable but at least bearable. If they improved the comfort of the beds then we would be happy to return next year, as apart from the beds we enjoyed our stay. The swimming pool looked nice, but it was too cold to use. The lifeguard must be very bored as during our stay I saw no one in the pool, but the sunbeds were very in good use with people spread around the sunny side of the pool. The position of the hotel is very good. There are many restaurants, shops and bars nearby and it is only a 5 minute walk to the nearest beach. The best sandy beaches are about a 10 minute walk away, as you leave the Colon II turn left just keeping walking down this road past the restaurants, shops and hotels until you reach the prom/beach area and the sandy beaches of Playa de Las Vistas. Alternatively after leaving the Colon II you can cross the road and walk down the path nearly opposite down to the nearest access to the sea, there is a wide promenade around most of this beach costal area. You can either turn left or follow the prom around to Las Vistas area (takes about 20-25 mins) or turn right and visit smaller beaches further along the coast. There are many tourist type restaurants in the area. All types of cuisine are catered for; there are Chinese, Indian, Italian, Greek, Steak houses and many other types of restaurants. Previous reviews have mentioned Las Rosas restaurant which is on the opposite side of the road from the apartments. We did eat there a few times and it was good value, a full English breakfast for 2.75 euro and a 3 course evening meal for less than 10 euro with choices for starter, main course and sweets. But in addition many other tourist restaurants in the area had full English breakfasts for under 3 euros and most of them also had similar 3 course evening meal deals. The Chinese restaurant around the corner had all you could eat buffets for under 10 euro, and 2 Indian restaurants had 3 course meals for under 13 euro. There is plenty of choice. Alcohol in the restaurants is reasonably priced normally under 3 euroâs for a pint, although in the daytime quite a few establishments advertise a pint of lager for 1 euro and in the heat of the day it was nice to stop, relax and have a cold pint. Previous reviews have mentioned Tony Romaâs and the onsite restaurant Mamma Rossa. We did have a couple of meals in Tonyâs, slightly more expensive that the other touristy restaurants, it was okay but not impressive. Mamma Rosaâs is more expensive, nice décor, friendly staff and looks wise a better quality restaurant. My wife enjoyed her meal, but unfortunately my main meal initially tasted nice with a slight garlic tasting sauce (which was not mentioned in the description on the menu). I normally enjoy garlic and hot curries, but the after effect felt like my mouth and throat were on fire. Unfortunately the taste and effect lasted for days, so I refused to use the restaurant again. There are many small supermarkets around, but the closest larger supermarket is about 5 minutesâ walk away. Use the footpath next to the hotel, walk up the slope and where the path meets the next main road, the supermarket is directly in front of you. We had a very enjoyable holiday.More
Christmas/new year visit
Had a one bedroom studio apartment on the second floor which was spacious and clean. The maids we very good even if you got up late they always came back and cleaned the room. Both the towels and bedding were changed frequently and even though we didn't cook much and only really used the toaster and kettle the maid gave us some washing up liquid. Thanks for that! The only downside is that the pool is cold and quite shaded in areas (as well as the usual selfish people who reserve the beds and go off for most of the day). The cafe at the front of the hotel is lovely and we used this most days either to have a coffee and cake or an alcoholic drink and people watch of an evening. We found everyone here to be helpful especially the lovely ladies on reception. Will be returning as it is near to all areas and has a lovely selection of bars and restaurants that are reasonably priced. More
We stayed here for two weeks, end of December, beginning of January. Impressed with its location, a short walk to the nightlife if you want it, but with almost everything you need on your doorstep, bars, restaurants, a supermarket nearby. Everywhere was spotless and the staff were great, very friendly and helpful. Food in Mama Rosas was fabulous, a must eat restaurant. Las Rosas and the Savoy across the road offered great value and good food. Only negatives would be that the beds were uncomfortable, and the pool is very cold, probably as the pool itself got no sun. I usually use the pools on holiday a lot but only went in once, swam to the end and back and got out, it was that cold. I don't think we saw more than a handful of people go in it over the two weeks, and when someone did there was a buzz around the sun beds that someone had braved it! Shame as it's a lovely pool. Had a bored life guard on duty everyday too! There's a rush of people out at around half eight to put their towels out, but no different to anywhere else! We didn't find the apartments noisy as some reviews have said, a couple of nights/mornings we heard people coming back after a night out but that's going to be the same anywhere you go in Playa. Because of the pool I think we'll try somewhere else next year, shame as it ticks all the other boxes and was a lovely break.More
