Just home from a week stay myself and Mam. Reception was very poor, no communication. Rent a safe was 30 euro deposit and you get 10 back. To get a control for the tv you had to rent it for 10 Euro but you get it back when leaving. No need when you can use the buttons under the tv to change channels. Disco across the way went on till 6 and 7am in morning from Thursday night till Wednesday night. Shouting and screaming even with ear plugs didn't help. Pool nice and clean and rooms. Staff very ignorant. Wouldn't talk to you. Breakfast and dinner was fine. Booked taxi night before which the girl did when we were there for 8.30 this morning had to get them to ring taxi again that morning. Yesterday morning for breakfast three lads lost their card for breakfast but it was ok they were allowed in they were leaving after that anyway. Morning we were leaving Mam went in for breakfast with no card and man refused said we weren't on the list was someone else. We searched the bag and produced the card and was allowed in even though Mam had given the room number first time. Then when we were checking out the man behind the reception didn't speak to us when we handed back our cards and safety deposit key. I asked about taxi all he said was you can wait inside or outside. If your looking for friendly staff this isn't the place to go or to sleep with the nightclub.More
Nice but not for the English !!!
Not sure where to start but at the beginning. There are a few good points I guess. On arriving we went to reception and both did not speak any English!! good start!.. we were dealt with quite quicky but then again we were the only ones that got off our coach for this hotel. we hired a safety deposit box which was 40 euros for the 10 nights ( you get 10 euros back at end of stay) and we also hired a tv remote for 10 euros which you got back also. Hotel had 3 lifts which wasn't too bad and 6 floors. we made our way to lift and pressed button , nobody else around and as we waited, a spanish mother and teenage daughter came up and must of knew what lift was coming first and just went to that door and walked in , no common decency from most of the Spanish in there just rudeness.I did let her know my feelings straight away as door closed. when we got to out room we had originally booked a twin room expecting it to be two single rooms one for us and one for kids but on entering room there were two double beds pushed together, well you can imagine the horror on our 11yr old girl and 14 yr old lads faces. I did go down and asked for two single beds which never ever happened. took me half an hour trying to explain situation to the Spanish receptionist. the room itself was nice and clean though, nice shower room and balcony although we had no view just a back alley view with trees. No space in the room for 4 peoples clothes etc. Oh and don't waste ya money on tv remote as they are all Spanish channels only one English channel and that was BBC worldwide news. There were a couple of music channels which we put on for kids when getting ready etc. Big Tip just download tv remote app on your mobile which should work. Air conditioning was ok too as long as you closed veranda doors and shut curtains etc when going out. Cleaners we couldn't fault they were great! clean sheets and towels every day without fail and room was spotless if it needed to be done. Tea time came and we went down for our evening meal.. Two words to describe this occasion which is UTTER CHAOS... you queued to get in , once you were in there was no ushering to seats etc you just had to find your own, this was difficult enough as most of the tables still had pleates of half finshed food on them and were not being cleared away quick enough for the next people coming in. We also noticed trays of food were not being replenished quick enough so you had to wait if there was only a certain type you liked. people were like wolves around their prey filling their plates ten deep with food worried incase they missed out on something or it went. staff dropping trays of food on floor occasionally. The worst offenders were the people who were on half board bringing bags in or rucksacks and taking food out with them for lunch or evening meals. The food is very European orientated towards the Spanish or germans, not much for the English unless you like that variety. breakfast consisted of eggs, beans, sausages (if that's what they were! they just looked like hot dogs and tasted worse), streaky bacon which looked like ham. very poor, I cant really remember what else there was as we just tended to have egg and beans with toast. Oh you do get coffee, tea or juice etc in a morning ONLY. why this is not available during other meal times is beyond me..money saving obviously. If you fancy a nice big breakfast then pop out hotel turn right and walk about 200 yards down street and you will come across a place called Lindas Bar 5 euros for a huge breakfast and 2 euros for a mug of nescafe. Best 7 euros spent on a lovely breakfast with proper bangers etc . Lunch was basically the same as evening meal. chips, spaghetti and ravioli etc plenty salad food to choose from and fruit etc, plenty pastries for the kids, evening meal was ok too pizza for the kids, different meats such as beef, pork and chicken, chips again, soup was available, fishes, spaghetti etc , to be fair some food was ok but could have been better. There are two pools and lots of beds for everyone, we had no problems getting beds the days we were there and was always nice and clean. pool bar didn't open till 10.30am or roundabouts there. drinks are reasonably priced. coffee, tea, pop and beer available from bar raging from 1 to 3 euros. pools were well looked after and we had no problems there. Entertainment in hotel was naff, again very Spanish orientated with Spanish singers or crooners, flamenco dancers nothing to make you go wow! we ended up going our walking most nights or shopping. 2 mins to the main shopping strip. We went to portaventura over two days, to the water park and also the portaventura world. I would say don't bother with the water park as it is pants and very small. not many rides. whereas port Aventura world is a must, great for the kids, one tip if you can afford it is definitely get the fast trak tickets as the queues are horrendous, we were there from 10am till 10pm at night and most of that was standing in queues waiting for rides.we didn't go to ferrarri land but it looked good from the outside. Salou beach is also a visit to. 5 minute walk from our hotel and lovely sandy beach and clear water. beds are 5 euros each and a parasol is 5 euros. lots to do down there also , plenty shops etc and there is a macdonalds and burger king which don't charge a arm and a leg either. Overall salou is a nice place and would definitely go back but it wouldn't be to California Gardens. 3 star is about what you get.More

2nd year in a row
This is our 2nd visit to this hotel, stayed here a year ago also. Booked again due to pleasant staff, amazing animation (kids club/entertainments) and lovely atmosphere. Always make me and my son feel welcome (im a single mum who travels with my 9 year old solo). This time the staff remembered my son by name. the Thomson holiday rep can't do enough for you even visiting our room on our 3rd day to see if we were enjoying our holiday (we wasn't in but she left a personalised note under the door) which I think is a lovely service. Hotel has had a face lift since last time including bar area and restaurant which was lovely to see. Rooms are your basic 3* twin rooms and are cleaned beautifully each day. Picky eaters won't appreciate the food options but if your willing to embrace the Spanish culture then it's full steam ahead with something different every night. Didn't find a fault last time and doubt I'm going to find one again. Don't bother reserving sunbeds and disappearing for the day, staff will move your things onto a chair nearby and give your loungers up to people who actually want to sit by the pool (I love this idea as I find it rude reserving and not using, just plain greedy). Hotel is 10 min slow walk to portaventura and 5 mins to the beach and shops. Great if you want a mixture of everything. Thomson reps (TUI) offer a range of trips including boat trips and trips to Barcelona for reasonable prices and you know you're in safe hands so can just sit back and relax. Kayley our rep was a gem xxx See you all again next year, for now I'm going to hop back in that pool and cool off :)More
Ear plugs needed
Stayed at this hotel for our first family holiday abroad and it was a nightmare. There is a night club across the road that starts in the small hours of the morning and continues until around 6.30am. Don't expect to sleep between these times. The noise level was awful. Constant boom boom boom and when u think it's over you then have to listen to the shouting and singing as they make there way home. If the noise wasn't getting you from one side it was coming from the other. The hotel takes in groups of young people who were running the length of the corridor, knocking on each other doors and standing right outside our door playing music, I don't know where the adult supervision was. The food was a let down too, the breakfast items were swimming in grease and looked half cooked. The fruit juice was watered down. We lived on toast and beans. The evening meal wasn't much better, we ended up eating out a few times. The room was very basic, small and needed updating. Not the picture I was shown by travel agent. It was clean and we got fresh towels everyday. The air conditioning unit was noisy also and there was no controls, was either on or off. The pool shuts at 6.30 and you are allowed inflatables. Don not stay at this hotel if you are a light sleeper!!!! It is close to shops, beach and Port Aventura. More
