Since 01 October 2004, in the Republic of Ireland, all children regardless of age must obtain an individual passport in their own name. In Northern Ireland from 05 October 1998, children under 16 have been required to travel on their own passport.
Children who are included on their parent’s passports issued before these dates may continue to travel to most countries until they reach 16. However, please be aware that some countries, such as Bulgaria, may refuse entry to any children without their own passports.
If a new document is required during the validity of your existing passport, any child who is included on it will need to apply for a separate passport.
Passport application can be a lengthy process, so we recommend that you plan ahead and keep your holiday dates in mind.
