Until recently, this stretch of the southern 'Coast of Light' was strictly locals only and it remains genuinely uncrowded. Stretching 90km from the Portuguese border to Gibraltar, it boasts long golden sand beaches, more reminiscent of the Algarve. It also benefits from a constant warm breeze, helped along by the Atlantic, making it excellent for windsurfers. Costa de la Luz has not seen the high rise hotel development of other areas of mainland Spain, so its beautiful scenery remains almost as it always has. The temperatures are often slightly milder, and the strong Atlantic winds and waves are favoured by windsurfers and surfers alike. There are various religious festivals throughout spring and summer, some of which are celebrated nationally, and some just locally. Some of those which have proved more popular with tourists include the Carnival Festival at Cadiz, and the Royal Fair and Festivities of the Grape Harvest. For a taste of the local city culture, visits to Huelva and particularly Seville are important inclusions on any traveller's itinerary.

As with many mainland coastal regions, fish and shellfish are an important part of the local culinary tradition. Specialities include bienmesabe (pickled dogfish), rayfish in paprika, small shrimp omelettes and sea bream with onions. There is also a long history of wine making in the area, particularly in the south around Jerez. Such wines are recommended as an aperatif, or whilst enjoying the local seafood.
