Holidays to Aghios Nikolaos – fondly known as Ag Nik – are all about the water. You’ve got a colourful harbour, easy access to 5 beaches, and a good-looking lake lined with bars and cafés.
A resort with a lake
Set on the east coast of Crete, Aghios Nikolaos – or Ag Nik as it’s fondly known – is all about the water. You’ve got a marina here and a harbour filled with colourful fishing boats. They’re just the warm-up acts, though. The town’s real star is the lake, which comes ringed with lively cafés and bars.
When it comes to the beaches, Aghios Nikolaos deals up a multipack of 5. Most of them are on the small side, but they’re all within a 15-minute walk. One of the nearest is Havania, which comes with sunloungers, beach bars and watersports. If you want to venture further, a 10-minute drive gets you to Almyros, a 3-kilometre strip in a sheltered cove.
It may not be the tiny fishing village it used to be, but Aghios Nikolaos still has its old-time charm. You can see it when you climb the town’s 7th-century chapel and look down at the sugar-cube houses and traditional tavernas. And if you want a cracking view of the lake, pop into the little park just above it.
Day trips to Elounda
Just 20 minutes by car gets you to Elounda. On the outskirts, you can walk round what’s left of a Minoan town – some of it’s under the sea so you might want to bring your snorkelling kit. Back in the centre, the main square serves up a good quota of cafes and souvenir shops. Alternatively, you could just spend the day lazing on the sandy beach here.
